BELIEVING IS PRACTICING

By Ganiyu Ayanniyi Mubaraq

With all due respects, I greet all believers with this revolution piece of writing. It has come to my notice since that many believers still practice what they believe no more, but, I just gained the privilege to take it to writing so as to express my view.

As a popular Yoruba proverb says “A kìí ka ilé òrìşà kún ìlú”. One can imagine how diverse the Yoruba tribe is. As well, one can connote that the tribe believes that human beings are different from deities or idols. Basically, here I justify too that believing in one religious conception is also practicing it.

Extensively, let me take some Yorubas as example (I’m also included), they believe in some old religious myths which are always outside their belief of either Christianity or Islam. Most of the stories are usually transferred from parents to offspring. Some of these stories might be fabricated either through real scenes or through scenes of baseless roots or maybe to create fears into mind of younger ones. Some of these stories include: i. If one packs filth after sweeping at night, one risk of losing his or her parent early. ii. If one gets troubled for long, it is believed to be supernatural. Etc
Additionally, most of these acceptances (assumptions) of such come from the old cultural beliefs which I think must have been stopped inhaling during the course of accepting new religion. I believe that taking or accepting anything (facts) coming from previous religion or belief is also accepting it even if it’s not a total agreement. One must stand still in his or her religion as doing anything beyond it is a sign of acceptance of other except some cases whereby one has no choice than doing it, but, one must not devote his/her soul for it, the soul is the most precious and in this case only God can know a true believer.

Finally, I want you to know that this piece doesn’t condemn anything from here to there. It is just an expression of mind which can be done openly to shed light or bring out information. Also, one should stay bold in whatever one does as far as it does not affect the world or your environment negatively. Consider others first!
