OPEN LETTER TO CONCERNED STAKEHOLDERS ON THE NEED FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF FEDERAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION IN EJIGBO, EJIGBO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, OSUN STATE

Dear Sir/Ma,

EJIGBO LOCAL GOVERNMENT DESERVES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

We bring warm greetings to you all and wish you Compliments of the Season!

The sole purpose of this letter is to make a case for the siting of a new Federal College of Education in Ejigbo, Ejigbo Local Government,  Osun State. The Federal Government of Nigeria under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari recently gave approval for the establishment of six new federal colleges of education to be spread across the six geo-political zones of the country. It was stated that these colleges would be sited in states where there are no presence of Federal College of Education and this made Osun State to get it in Southwest. Ever since, there has been hot debates on which community would host the new Federal College of Education in Osun State.

It should however be recalled that a member of the House of Representatives in the 8th Assembly who represented Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Professor Mojeed Alabi had earlier sponsored the Bill for the Establishment of Federal College of Education Ejigbo. The bill was still at the Second Reading before the dissolution of the 8th Assembly. An urgent call goes to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. 'Femi Gbajabiamila to allow speedy passage of the bill through the Committee Stage and Third Reading before passing it to the President for assent.

Ejigbo Local Government Area is one of the oldest local government areas in Osun State and Nigeria at large. The local government with its headquarters in Ejigbo has over forty (40) towns, villages and settlements.

The people of Ejigbo Local Government see education as the bedrock for development and therefore place premium on education. At present, the local government has about twenty thousand students in different disciplines spread across tertiary institutions in Nigeria and abroad. As a demonstration of her strong interest in education, the local government boasts of two thousand applicants (admission seekers) each year with not more than less than five hundred making it into tertiary institutions (University, Polytechnic, College of Education, Monotechnic). The remaining set of applicants are left to wander since the available institutions have exhausted their carrying capacity. This set of people soon loose interest in education, contribute to illiteracy level in the society, automatically join the pool of unemployed, take into drugs and other vices, while some migrate to become unskilled labourers in other countries. In line with the aforementioned, the establishment of *Federal College of Education in Ejigbo, Ejigbo Local Government Area, Osun State* will not only provide access to education for young secondary school leavers, but also it will drastically reduce the level of illiteracy and bring about peace and development. In fact, this will reduce the rate at which able-bodied citizens who are meant to contribute to the development of the country migrate to other countries (especially in West Africa). There is gain saying the fact that standard of education sector rests on the quality of the teachers; the establishment of Federal College of Education Ejigbo, Ejigbo Local Government Area, Osun State would help to produce competent and qualified teachers in different specializations.

Among other reasons, our demand is anchored on the following points:

• The people of Ejigbo Local Government has the intellectual zeal and exceptional passion for education.
• A large suitable expanse of land has been provided by the community for this laudable project.
• The establishment of Federal College of Education will create unique opportunities for Ejigbo indigenes both living in Nigeria and abroad other countries to put up investments at home, and this will
boost the economy both at the State and National levels.
• The Ejigbo Local Government needs a Federal Government project such as the Federal College of Education to sprint other developmental projects and necessary infrastructure.
• The establishment of Federal College of Education Ejigbo will bring about more researches by both the staff and students of the College on the problems confronting education in Nigeria and how best these problems can be tackled.

• The College when take off will require the services of personnel both as academic and non-academic staff. This will greatly reduce the level of unemployment as jobless graduates and other categories of people would be gainfully employed.

We therefore call on all the concerned stakeholders to both at Federal and State to see the need for the approval and establishment of Federal College of Education Ejigbo, Ejigbo Local Government Area, Osun State. We call on the Honourable Member representing Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency, Hon. Bamidele Salam to re-present the Bill for the Establishment of Federal College of Education Ejigbo on the floor of the House of Representatives and work for the speedy passage of the bill. We equally call on the Governor State of Osun, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola use every opportunity at his disposal to support the establishment of Federal College of Education Ejigbo. While we appreciate the ongoing efforts by some of our people, we  call on all sons and daughters of Ejigbo Local Government to come together both in action and in prayer in order to make the task a success.

Thanks and God Bless!

Abdullahi Oludoye FOLARANMI,
